St John’s senior choir sing at services on the first Sunday in the month at 8.30 am (Choral Matins), and every Sunday evening at 6.30 pm (Choral Communion/Evensong). The juniors join the seniors for the 1st and 3rd Sunday evening services.
The choir meet to practise in church every Thursday in term time.
The juniors 7pm – 8pm … ages 8 to 12
The seniors 7.30pm – 8.45pm.
All Festival services are choral, and many wedding couples choose to have the choir for their special day. Four part Anthems are sung, the choir is fortunate to have a strong harmony section and twenty soprano/trebles.
The choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). All junior choristers have tuition in general musicianship, leading to the RSCM awards: light blue ribbon, dark blue and red.
For the over 12’s, externally examined RSCM awards may be taken. Success in these lead to the Dean’s award, Bishop’s award and the Gold award.
St John’s choir also has two holders of the Archbishop’s award.
Being part of the choir isn’t all work. The choir have a coffee morning each term, the juniors go ten pin bowling each year with members of the church Youth Group, and in July and December the full choir meet for supper.
St John’s choristers have raised money for several charities each Christmas through carol singing at the two local pubs, and in the village. Each summer, they also host a social event for the whole parish with food and entertainment.
The Music Director would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in joining the choir.
